So, I have most of my garden planted...all except my sweet corn and some gourds. I am running out of room! Hopefully I get a good turn out. We have had tons of rain this spring and then lately, not much at all. We could use some more rain! There are a few new items that I am trying this year. Radishes, Onions, Fennel and Sweet Potatoes. I also got my Rhubarb and Horseradish planted too. Oh yea, and a few herbs...I am sooo not organized! I really need to plan better. My goal is to be self-sufficient, at least when it comes to fruits and veggies, meat and eggs. I have very little patience when it comes to doing a little at a time, so then I get my brain in a cluster and before I know it, I am walking, talking and thinking in circles! AAAHHH!! Well, let's add writing in circles too! haha...
I started a lot of my seeds this year, but some were not so successful. Lavendar, a big flop! I planted about thirty seeds, they started to sprout! I brought them outside to get used to that, we're doing good! I planted them, and suddenly, VAMOOSE...what the ??????? Maybe next year.
I am going to try a little farm girl bartering this summer, maybe some chicken for some strawberries. I would like to make some Strawberry and Strawberry-Rhubarb Jam. Also would like to freeze some for shortcake. If anyone out there is willing to trade, contact me! :) pj.poultry@gmail.com
No matter how my garden journey goes, I like to garden barefoot. It's the best feeling, that freshly turned dirt under your feet in the spring. Makes you really feel free, like being a kid again, making mud pies. Sometimes I want to make dirt-angels, ya know like a snow-angel, but in the dirt. ;) hehehe.
Ta-ta for now, and happy planting!
March 2011
I had ordered some seeds for Peas and Rainbow corn...I call it Indian corn, but must be they stopped calling it that or something, because that's not what they called it in the book. I planted some last year and it turned out great!! It was super tall, and nice big ears!
I ordered quite a bit of peas to plant. I thought I planted enough last year, but that proved me wrong! Hopefully I can get it right next time around!
I think I will get one of those mini-greenhouse seed starter jobbies, and see how that works. I really would to start my own tomatoes and other things too!
I also would like to grow some herbs this year. I definately want to grow some lavender. I have also ordered some rhubarb and horseradish, and a peach tree!! I can't wait to plant that, and pick peaches from it too! I think I've got a while before that happens though. I canned peaches for the first time last year, and it was awesome! I will be doing that every year for a while. The kids love them, and that makes me a happy mom!
February 2011
With spring right around the corner, it's time for me to start thinking about the garden. I CAN'T WAIT!
Now, I am by no means a garden master, but I enjoy it throroughly, and when it comes to groceries, it does help save some dough!
Unfortunately I am not one of those queens of organization...Oh how I admire them! I guess you could say I need some help in that area, but none the less, I do try to plan my garden out. I think and think and think some more about what I want to plant, and try to stick to what I really need and can handle. But there's so many choices, ideas, the possiblities are just endless! I should know better than to look seed catalogs, but I never learn! I guess you could say I am a garden glutton...it's an addicition or maybe an infatuation of seeds and seedlings, a new beginning, a start to natures wonders. I love flowers and the satisfaction of watch the veggies grow to provide food for our family. It kind of makes you feel rich with food, like you have succeeded at something.
Addiction or infatuation, either way, I spend a small fortune during the spring, especially once the local greenhouses open for the season! So many choices, so little time! I guess I can't blame Jeremy if he's glad when the end of the growing season approaches...there's no planting anything in this frozen wonderland!
